On a cool but sunny morning I wandered around a mile long lake path that meanders from a few hotels to Downtown Disney in Orlando. The mouth-watering scent of "home-cooked" food wafted through the pre-lunch air, hitting first my nostrils and then my brain. I followed its trail until I was behind The House of Blues. Amused to see 11:00 am diners already stuffing themselves, I walked around the building until I came to the porch and outdoor bar. Here is the real entertainment, the folk art covering every inch of the place. I was suddenly smack in the middle of my heaven.
Using a great deal of imagination, and a moderate amount of paint in a massive array of color, folk art feeds the soul. As far as I was concerned, my meal had arrived, and I had a feast before me. An hour later, sighing with satisfaction, I reluctantly left the building but not its influence.
Driving home, the words "art feeds the soul" went round and round in my head until it seemed to keep time with the spinning tires of my Jeep. Catchy little phrase. Although it was more of a feeling. But by the time I arrived home, it was my motto. I incorporated it into my artist's statement and soon typed it onto my bio sheet and introduction cards. I believe it. I feel it. I live it.
Creating art is a little like taking a risk when growing a garden. Sometimes it requires a sizeable investment, and can even become emotional. You plan it, plant it, pluck it. Sometimes it's good. And sometimes it's great. Either way, it's rewarding in that you tried. Why not take a risk in your own garden, whatever it may be. Painting, designing, throwing clay, writing, melting metal...whatever it is. Grow with your creation and feed your soul.
"Creating art...feeds the soul. Creation is magic. Exploration is freedom. Exploring the freedom of creativity that results in something beautiful is like growing and preparing food to feed others. Artists serve by offering their feast of beauty. It is a way to give back." -Linda Underwood

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place. -Pablo Picasso
